Just saw Last King of Scotland over the weekend...whoah. Really loved it. Makes me feel pretty sheepish for knowing virtually nothing about Idi Amin whose regime was responsible for over 300,000 deaths between 1971-79. The film doesn't give a whole lot of historical context for what's going on in Uganda during that time. It leans more toward a character study of one of the 20th century's bloodiest dictators, as told through the eyes of his personal (Scottish) physician. Forest Whitaker definitely earned that Best Actor oscar.
Looks like The Host is coming to The Fox Tower soon and is being advertised as the greatest monster movie ever made. It certainly must be up there. I don't watch too many monster movies, but I've never seen one combine such high quality story telling, suspense, humor, and social commentary all in the same movie. Don't miss it.
Have also recently seen Lives of Others. (It's been cold & rainy, what can I say?) It beat out Pan's Labyrinth for Best Foreign Language film...which I suppose means absolutely nothing.
